JOSEPHINE FOSTER
Revisiting songs from her Emily Dickinson-inspired album Graphic As A Star.
Josephine Foster is a genre bending musician, artist and composer from Colorado, USA, known around the world for her own out-of-time singing and songs, as well as for the interpretation and setting of poets from days of yore.
Her acclaimed album of Emily Dickinson poems ‘Graphic as a Star’ was released in 2010 on Fire Records. She has also set the poems of Joyce, Coleridge, Cather, Poe, Millay, and others. Her collaborations and performances with figures from the underground around the world contrast with the popular appeal of her work, which has been featured in films and television.

POLLY PAULUSMA
Introduces her new album Invisible Music: Folk Songs That Influenced Angela Carter (2021). In 2003, tucked away in her garden shed, 28-year-old Polly Paulusma recorded her debut album Scissors In My Pocket. Record label One Little Indian signed her up and ‘Scissors…’ received immediate and widespread critical acclaim upon its international release in 2004. Paulusma was catapulted round the world, supporting Bob Dylan, Jamie Cullum, Coldplay, The Divine Comedy, Marianne Faithfull, and played Glastonbury, T in the Park and Cambridge Folk Festival. Since then she has released two studio albums and is slated to release two more (‘Invisible Music’, and a 24-track double album ‘The Pivot On Which Everything Turns’, in 2022). She founded folk label Wild Sound in 2012, now an imprint at the newly-named One Little Independent. She teaches English/song to Cambridge English undergraduates and has just completed a PhD on Angela Carter’s folk singing.

SCHWA
Playing music inspired by the writings of Kathleen Jamie, Christina Rosetti and Edna St Vincent Millay. SCHWA are Peter Spafford, Richard Ormrod and Jacqui Wicks. They create feature-length performance pieces of songs, words (both ancient and original) and music, usually around a theme. THRESHOLD explored how they feel about hospitality, travellers, stranger; HOPE OF A TREE used songs and stories from all over the world to reflect on the part trees play in our lives, from seed to sideboard. They play piano, ukulele, accordion, woodwind, guitars and percussion, and their most recent full-length recording, THRESHOLD, is available on Bandcamp now: https://schwasters.bandcamp.com/album/threshold

Performances will be interspersed readings from poets Jacqui Wicks of Schwa, and Stockton-based poet and activist Dianne Casey.
The event will be hosted by local musician and author Francoise Harvey, from Darlington Crown Street Library.
